Care Instructions
Care Instructions
Caring for human hair extensions starts before installation and continues throughout every wear. This guide covers the essential care practices that apply across many SL Raw premium human hair extensions, including raw hair wefts, I-Tips, wigs and textured hair extensions.
While every extension method has its own maintenance requirements, the fundamentals remain the same: inspect your hair before altering it, cleanse with moisture-focused products, detangle gently, dry thoroughly, minimize buildup and protect the hair while sleeping.
Curly textures, microlinks and keratin bond extensions require additional care based on the texture or installation method. Throughout this guide, we'll direct you to more detailed instructions when specialized care is needed.
Hair Extension Care Essentials
- Inspect your extensions before washing, coloring, cutting or installing them.
- After inspecting your order, wash and condition SL Raw raw hair before installation.
- Use a hydrating shampoo and moisturizing conditioner.
- Detangle gently from the ends upward without forcing through knots.
- Make sure both your extensions and natural hair are thoroughly dry.
- Use a leave-in conditioner for added softness and manageability when appropriate.
- Apply a spray heat protectant before using blow dryers, flat irons or curling irons.
- Protect your extensions from friction while sleeping.
Before Installing Your Hair Extensions
1. Inspect Your Hair First
Before washing or altering your extensions, remove them from the packaging and carefully examine your order. Confirm that you received the correct texture, length, color and quantity.
Complete this inspection before shampooing, conditioning, coloring, cutting, removing tags or beginning installation.
2. Wash and Condition Raw Hair Before Installation
SL Raw raw human hair extensions should be washed and conditioned before installation. This is especially important for raw curly and textured hair, including kinky curly, soft kinky curly and loose curly textures.
Use a gentle hydrating shampoo followed by a moisture-rich conditioner. Proper cleansing and conditioning helps prepare the hair for detangling, styling and installation while allowing the natural texture to settle into its pattern.
After rinsing the conditioner thoroughly, a lightweight spray leave-in conditioner may be applied to help support softness, moisture and manageability.
If you need help selecting formulas, see our recommended hair products for extensions.
Curly I-Tips should be inspected, detangled, washed and conditioned before installation. Watch how we prepare Kinky Curly I-Tips fresh out of the package before microlink installation.
For the full preparation steps, view the curly I-Tip prep tutorial.
3. Dry Completely Before Installation
Loose extensions should be completely dry before they are installed. How you dry them depends on the extension type.
Raw wefts may be hung on a hanger and allowed to air dry naturally. Loose I-Tips can be laid flat in a clean, well-ventilated area until completely dry. For curly and textured extensions, allowing the hair to dry without unnecessary manipulation can also help preserve the natural curl pattern.
Do not install extensions while they are still damp.
4. Protect Raw Weft Construction
When installing raw weft hair, avoid unnecessarily cutting through the weft track. Cutting a weft creates additional open points where shedding can occur. When the installation allows, your stylist may fold the weft rather than repeatedly cutting it.
How to Detangle Human Hair Extensions
Gentle detangling is one of the most important parts of extension maintenance. Excessive pulling, aggressive brushing and repeatedly forcing a brush through knots can contribute to unnecessary shedding, breakage and tangling.
Start From the Ends
Work in manageable sections. Begin at the ends of the hair and gradually work upward toward the mid-lengths. If the hair is installed, support the hair above the section you are brushing so you are not placing unnecessary tension on the installation.
Use the Right Detangling Method for the Texture
Straight and wavy extensions can generally be brushed as needed using an extension-friendly brush. Curly and coily textures require a different approach and are best detangled while damp or wet with sufficient moisture and slip.
Never force through a knot. Separate the section and gently work through the tangle instead.

How to Wash Human Hair Extensions
Before shampooing, gently detangle the extensions. Use lukewarm water and keep the hair traveling in its natural downward direction instead of bunching, twisting or aggressively rubbing the hair together.

Shampoo
Use a gentle, hydrating shampoo. Distribute the cleanser carefully through the hair and rinse thoroughly.
For installed extensions, concentrate on properly cleansing the scalp and hair while handling the attachment area according to the requirements of your extension method.
Condition
Follow with a moisturizing conditioner to restore softness and improve manageability. Work the conditioner through the lengths and ends of the extensions and gently detangle as appropriate for the texture before rinsing thoroughly.
Finish with a lightweight spray leave-in conditioner when additional moisture or detangling support is needed.
Avoid placing conditioner, oils and heavy styling products directly on extension attachment points. Product buildup around beads or keratin bonds can interfere with the installation. Follow your method-specific care guide for detailed wash-day instructions.
How Often Should You Wash Hair Extensions?
There is no single wash schedule that works for every extension wearer. Your cleansing frequency depends on your installation method, scalp, lifestyle, exercise routine, product use and hair texture.
The goal is to keep both the scalp and extensions clean without unnecessarily overwashing the hair. Product buildup, sweat and excess oils should not be allowed to accumulate for long periods.
Installed extensions may also require professional cleansing and maintenance according to the schedule established by your stylist.
For additional guidance by installation type, read What Hair Products Should I Use—and How Often?
Drying Hair Extensions Properly
Drying requirements change depending on whether your extensions are loose or installed.
Loose Wefts and I-Tips
Air drying is an excellent low-manipulation option for loose human hair extensions. Wefts may be hung to dry, while loose I-Tips can be laid flat in a clean, ventilated area.
Curly extensions can benefit from being left undisturbed as they dry so the natural curl pattern can form without unnecessary agitation.
Installed Sew-Ins and Wefts
With a sew-in or similar weft installation, thoroughly drying your natural hair and the foundation underneath the extensions is essential. Sitting under a hooded dryer can provide consistent, concentrated drying around the head without continuously disturbing the extension hair.
Salon maintenance is strongly recommended for installations where it may be difficult to fully cleanse and dry the natural hair and foundation at home.
Installed I-Tips and Keratin Bonds
I-Tip and keratin bond installations can be dried with a hooded dryer or blow dryer when appropriate. If using a blow dryer, handle the hair gently and avoid unnecessary pulling or repeated direct heat on the attachment points.
Air drying can reduce direct heat exposure to the extension hair, but your natural hair and the attachment area still need to dry thoroughly. Do not leave installed extensions wet or damp for prolonged periods, and never go to bed with wet extensions.
Heat Styling Human Hair Extensions
Human hair extensions can be styled with common thermal tools, including blow dryers, curling irons and flat irons, when the hair and extension method permit.
Before applying heat, lightly mist the hair with a spray heat protectant. Use only as much heat as necessary to create the style and avoid repeatedly passing high-temperature tools over the same section.
Frequent heat styling can gradually affect the moisture, softness and texture of human hair, especially curly hair. If maintaining the original curl pattern is important to you, keep repeated straightening and excessive heat to a minimum.
Choose Hair Products That Support Moisture
Hair extensions do not receive the same natural oils from your scalp that your own growing hair receives throughout its length, making a consistent moisture-focused routine especially important.
Look for a hydrating shampoo, moisturizing conditioner and lightweight leave-in conditioner. Styling products should support the hair without leaving excessive sticky or heavy residue that can contribute to buildup and tangling.

Sleeping With Hair Extensions
Nighttime protection helps reduce friction, tangling and unnecessary manipulation while you sleep.
Gently detangle your extensions before bed and secure longer hair in a loose, low-tension style appropriate for the texture. Straight and wavy extensions may be loosely braided, wrapped or secured. Curly and coily extensions may be loosely braided, twisted or otherwise protected in a way that preserves the curl pattern.
Cover the hair with a satin bonnet or silk or satin scarf. A satin or silk pillowcase can provide additional friction protection.
Most importantly, never go to sleep with wet or damp installed extensions.
Swimming, Exercise and Moisture
Sweat, chlorine and salt water can increase the need for cleansing and conditioning. Before swimming, gently detangle and secure your extensions. Wetting the hair with clean water before entering a pool or ocean can also help reduce how much chlorinated or salt water the hair absorbs.
After swimming, rinse thoroughly with fresh water and follow with moisture as needed. If you exercise heavily, make sure the scalp, natural hair and extension attachment area do not remain damp from perspiration.
Your extension method matters here. Microlinks, keratin bonds and sewn-in extensions each have different attachment areas that require proper drying and maintenance.
Professional Hair Extension Maintenance
Home care and salon care work together. Permanent and semi-permanent extension installations should be professionally maintained according to the method used, your natural hair growth and your stylist's recommended schedule.
A professional maintenance appointment allows the stylist to evaluate the installation, cleanse difficult-to-reach areas when necessary, address tangling or slippage and make sure your natural hair and extensions continue to be maintained correctly.
Do not attempt to remove professional I-Tip or keratin bond installations without the proper training and tools.
Curly and Textured Hair Requires Additional Care
Curly, kinky and coily extensions require more texture-specific moisture, detangling and styling techniques than we can appropriately cover inside a universal care guide.
Between wash days, curly hair can be lightly misted with water when moisture is needed. A lightweight leave-in can help restore softness and manageability, but avoid continuously layering heavy products onto the hair.
For wash-day routines, refreshing curls, curl definition, deep conditioning and detailed detangling instructions, continue to our Curly Hair Extension Care Guide.
What Affects the Lifespan of Hair Extensions?
There is no single lifespan that applies to every human hair extension product. Longevity depends on the type and quality of hair, extension method, frequency of wear, installation, home maintenance, heat exposure, chemical processing and how the extensions are handled between installations.
Consistent cleansing, moisture, gentle detangling, thermal protection, proper drying and professional maintenance where required can help preserve the condition of your extensions over time.

Best Soft ***** Curly Hair!
From the moment I started using these extensions, I knew they were different. The soft ***** curly hair is incredibly easy to manage and style. Blends well with my natural curls. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I bought four packs in 20-inch and 24-inch lengths. Although I had a few tips left, my stylist used the majority of them. My hair density is quite thick, and I must say the coverage is excellent with my microlinks. I've even tried flat ironing my hair, which turned out beautifully, and on wash day, the hair looked as good as new. I highly recommend these extensions if you're looking for realistic curly hair.
I LOVE IT!!
