Your First Weave Experience? [5 Essential Tips for First-Time Wearers]

Getting a weave for the first time can be an exciting experience – in more ways than one.

But, if you want to make your first weave a wonderful experience to remember, there are a few basics that you should know.

So, let’s look at 5 things you must do as a first-time weave wearer.

 1. Choose your hair wisely

A great hairstyle starts with great hair.

So, if you want your weave to last and to look good, you need to invest in a good quality weave. And that starts with high-quality human hair extensions.

As a former stylist for some of Hollywood’s finest, I know how much of a difference the type of hair extension you choose makes for the style.

So, first thing out the door is to get high-quality human hair extensions.

2. Give your hair extensions quality care

When you invest in human hair, you need to treat it like it’s your very own hair. That is, it needs some love and tender care.

Weave maintenance requires shampoo and conditioning with good products, especially if you invested in human hair. You should shampoo your install at least once every 2 weeks and sit under a hooded dryer for 1.5 hours to ensure it dries properly.

If it doesn’t, this can lead to tangles in that lovely weave you’ve invested in or worst hair mildew.

So, if you don’t have a hood dryer yet, I recommend heading on over to Sally’s Beauty where you can get a hood dryer for less than $80.

3. Wrap it up at night

Another mistake to avoid as a first-time weave wearer is not tucking away the hair properly at night – or anytime you lay down for that matter.

Keeping your hair wrapped up securely as you sleep helps to extend the life of your hairstyle, prevent tangles, and reduce breakage. It’ll keep your hair in place so that your morning hair routine is so much easier.

So, be sure to tie your hair up at night using a satin bonnet or silk scarf.

4. Avoid tension when installing and wearing your weave

No, you do not need weaves put in so tightly they hurt. If you want to protect your natural hair while wearing weaves, this is key to hair retention and preventing breakage.

Tension can cause your natural hair to break or even come out from the roots leading to permanent hair follicle damage.

This is also important when caring for your weave. Try to avoid tension during the shampoo process.

5. Take it down when it’s done its time

Yes, the style still looks OK. But what about the health of your hair?

One of the mistakes that first-time weave wearers make is keeping in the weave for too long.

To ensure that you are taking care of your hair and scalp, it’s recommended that you never leave in a weave for more than 3 months. Ideally, 6-8 weeks is best but no more than 3 months.

Leaving in your weave too long can cause matting, excessive breakage and severe scalp issues can develop.

And that’s it. 5 key points to bear in mind for first-time weave wearers.
