Raw Indian Wavy Hair: What Makes Natural Wavy Hair Extensions Different?
Share
If you have been shopping for raw Indian hair, one of the first things you may notice is that authentic raw hair does not always look as perfectly uniform as a manufactured wave pattern. That is part of what makes it different.
SL Raw Natural Wavy Hair is the texture that helped start our hair extension collection. Before we expanded into I-Tips, microlinks and the broader extension methods we offer today, Natural Wavy was the raw Indian hair we were working with behind the chair and offering to our salon clients.
What made me appreciate it then is still what makes it special now: the hair has natural movement, it can be worn in its own soft wave, restyled with heat, or professionally colored when Natural Black is not the final shade you want.
What Is Raw Indian Wavy Hair?
Raw Indian Wavy Hair is human hair sourced in its natural state rather than being manufactured into one identical wave pattern. SL Raw Natural Wavy Hair is sourced from India and offered in its natural dark shade, with the donor's own wave, body and subtle variation preserved.
That means the beauty of raw hair is not perfect sameness. The goal is natural-looking movement, styling flexibility and hair that can be customized around the finished look you want.
The Hair That Started SL Raw
Natural Wavy has a different place in our collection because it was here before the larger collection existed.
I first worked with this hair in the salon, where extension clients wanted quality hair that could move naturally, be restyled and give them more flexibility than a texture that only looked good one way. It became one of the foundational textures we offered before SL Raw expanded further online and eventually into individual-strand methods like I-Tips and microlinks.
That history is also why I do not want to describe this hair as though every bundle is supposed to look manufactured or identical. Part of working with authentic raw hair is understanding what you are actually buying: natural human hair with its own characteristics.
What Makes Natural Wavy Different from a Manufactured Body Wave?
If your reference point for wavy extensions is a perfectly repeated “S” pattern from bundle to bundle, raw Natural Wavy hair may look different from what you expect.
The wave is not the result of forcing every bundle into one identical finished pattern. Subtle differences in wave formation, natural shade and body can occur because you are working with human hair in a more natural state.
Natural Wave Variation
One bundle may show a little more wave while another may fall slightly softer. Once cleansed and styled together, the goal is a natural overall blend rather than manufactured uniformity.
Natural Dark Tones
The hair is offered in Natural Black, but raw hair can show subtle natural differences through dark brown and black tones instead of an artificial flat dye result.
Soft Natural Body
Natural Wavy is for someone who wants movement and body without committing to a strong curly texture.
Because raw bundles can naturally vary, ordering your bundles at the same time gives us the best opportunity to prepare hair for the most cohesive texture match within your install.
Who Is Natural Wavy Hair Best For?
I would consider Natural Wavy when you want the flexibility of starting with a soft natural wave rather than choosing a hair texture that already has a very defined curl pattern.
You Want Soft Wavy Movement
Natural Wavy gives body and movement without creating the tighter definition you would expect from a curly extension texture.
You Want Styling Flexibility
The hair can be worn in its natural pattern or restyled into straighter finishes, larger curls and other heat-styled looks.
You Want a Custom Color
Natural Black can be the starting point rather than the finished shade when you are working with a professional colorist to create something more customized.
You Want Reusable Weft Hair
With proper care and an installation that preserves the weft, quality raw hair can be maintained and reused rather than treated as one-install hair.
SL Raw Natural Wavy Hair
Each weft is approximately 100 grams and gives you a natural wavy foundation that can be worn with its own movement or customized around your finished style.
Start with the product if you already know Natural Wavy is the texture you want. If you are still comparing textures or lengths, use the guides below before ordering.
What Does Natural Wavy Hair Look Like in Real Life?
Product photography is useful, but I also want you to see the hair moving on an actual person. Natural Wavy is not only about the wave you see when the bundle is sitting on a table. The way it falls, moves and responds to styling is part of the reason people choose it.

Look beyond the length while you watch. Notice how the hair moves as a complete style rather than holding one stiff, repetitive wave from root to ends.
“I absolutely love this hair! I swear it is some of the softest that I’ve ever had, and I’ve been wearing extensions for well over 20 years consistently. I’m super glad that I found you and will continue to do business with you!! Thanks for serving your clients with a great product.”
— Eugenia, verified SL Raw customer reviewCan You Straighten or Curl Raw Indian Wavy Hair?
Yes. Choosing a wavy texture does not mean you are required to wear the hair in its natural wave every day.
Natural Wavy can be heat-styled when you want a straighter finish, larger body curls or another temporary style. What I like about beginning with this texture is that you still have a natural pattern to return to after cleansing rather than buying hair solely because it has already been set into one particular finished hairstyle.
Air-Dried Waves
Cleanse, condition and allow the hair to air-dry when you want to see more of the natural wavy character of the bundles.
Heat-Styled Hair
Straighten or curl when you want a different finish, while using sensible heat and avoiding unnecessary repeated passes over the same section.
If long, flowing body curls are the look you want to recreate, see our long-lasting curl styling guide for the technique we use on long hair extensions.
Can Natural Black Raw Hair Be Colored?
This is one of the most important things to understand if you love the quality of raw hair but Natural Black is not the color you ultimately want to wear.
Natural Black is the starting shade of this hair. It does not have to be the finished color.
Raw human hair gives a professional colorist the ability to work from hair that has not already been manufactured into a pre-colored fashion shade. That can be especially useful when you want highlights, dimension, a warmer brunette, custom toning or a much lighter finished result.
But coloring is still a chemical service. Lightening in particular can change the hair's moisture, elasticity and natural wave behavior, so I recommend approaching major color changes with the same care you would use when professionally coloring your own hair.
How far the hair can be lifted and how it behaves afterward depends on the individual hair, the formula, developer, processing time and condition of the extensions. Test first and work with a licensed color professional for substantial lightening.
From Natural Black to Blonde: Tinsley Erin's Natural Wavy Hair
This is where seeing the finished result becomes much more useful than simply saying the hair “can be colored.”
Influencer and digital creator Tinsley Erin (@tinsleyerin) used SL Raw Natural Wavy Hair as the foundation for a customized lighter color. Her result shows what we mean when we say Natural Black can be the starting canvas rather than the only way the hair has to be worn.
Tinsley Erin Shows the Styling Range of Natural Wavy
Her finished look is a good example of why someone may intentionally purchase raw hair in its natural dark shade even when the final vision is much lighter.
The important part is planning the color transformation before installation so your colorist can evaluate the hair and create the result appropriately.
How Many Natural Wavy Bundles Do You Need?
Quantity should not be chosen from density alone. The extension length matters too.
Longer wefts need enough hair through the lower lengths to keep the finished perimeter from looking too thin. That is why someone wearing 24 inches or longer may need more hair than someone with the same natural density choosing a shorter installation.
| Natural Hair Density | 10–16 Inches | 18–22 Inches | 24–32 Inches |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fine | 2 bundles / 200g | 3 bundles / 300g | 4–5 bundles / 400–500g |
| Medium | 3 bundles / 300g | 3 bundles / 300g | 4–5 bundles / 400–500g |
| Coarse | 4 bundles / 400g | 5 bundles / 500g | 5+ bundles / 500g+ |
Do not judge quantity only by how full the installation looks near the scalp. Extra-long hair needs enough density traveling through the ends to keep the completed style balanced.
What Should You Expect When You First Wash Raw Natural Wavy Hair?
I recommend cleansing the hair before your installation, especially if you want to see how the natural wave behaves outside of the packaging.
Shampoo gently with a sulfate-free cleanser, follow with a moisturizing conditioner, rinse thoroughly and allow the hair to air-dry. This is when you can better evaluate the natural movement of the hair rather than judging the texture only from how a fresh bundle was folded, packaged or stored.
Raw Natural Wavy hair can show its wave differently once cleansed, conditioned and allowed to air-dry.
Natural variation is part of raw hair. The goal is for the bundles to work together as one finished installation, not for every individual strand to repeat the exact same curl formation.
How Can Natural Wavy Wefts Be Installed?
Natural Wavy is a machine-weft extension, so the installation should be planned around how you want the finished hair to blend and how much of your own hair you want visible.
Sew-In with Leave-Out
A traditional sew-in can allow your own hair to remain visible around the part or perimeter. Texture and color compatibility become especially important because your natural hair has to blend with the extensions.
Sew-In with a Closure
A closure can reduce the amount of natural-hair leave-out needed and create a finished parting area while the Natural Wavy wefts provide the length and fullness underneath.
The best construction depends on your natural density, desired style and the way you normally wear your hair. I recommend having the wefts professionally installed when you want the installation customized around your head and long-term wear.
“Usually it’s hit or miss when you order hair online, but I must say this hair is EVERYTHING!! Soft, manageable, and barely any shedding. My weaveologist was also surprised. I will order again and recommend.”
— Katie, SL Raw customer reviewHow to Care for Natural Wavy Hair Between Installs
Raw hair can last for years with proper care, but longevity is not automatic. How often you wear the hair, how much heat or color it receives, how it is installed and how it is maintained all affect its condition over time.
Detangle from the Ends
Support the hair while brushing and gradually work upward rather than repeatedly dragging a brush from the top through the full length.
Protect It at Night
Reduce friction by securing long lengths and protecting the hair with satin before sleeping.
Do Not Overload It
Heavy oils and repeated product layering can weigh down the natural movement. Use enough moisture to maintain the hair without coating it unnecessarily.
Use Tools That Give You More Control
Long wefts are easier to maintain when you can support the hair, work through the ends first and separate sections rather than pulling through the entire installation at once.
“The hair was very natural looking and soft. Overall good quality.”

Frequently Asked Questions
What is SL Raw Natural Wavy Hair?
SL Raw Natural Wavy Hair is raw Indian human hair offered as a machine weft in its natural dark shade and natural wavy pattern. It is intended for customers who want soft movement with the ability to restyle or professionally customize the hair.
Why do raw hair bundles sometimes look slightly different from each other?
Raw hair preserves more of the natural characteristics of the human hair rather than manufacturing every bundle into an identical pattern. Slight variation in wave, tone and body can occur. For the most cohesive installation, order the bundles you need together.
Can SL Raw Natural Wavy Hair be straightened?
Yes. The hair can be heat-styled into a straighter finish. Use sensible heat, apply heat protection and avoid unnecessary repeated passes that can gradually affect the condition of the extensions.
Can Natural Wavy hair be curled?
Yes. You can use a curling iron or other hot tool when you want a more defined curl than the natural wave provides. Allow the hair to cool after curling and avoid excessive product that can weigh down long lengths.
Can Natural Black raw Indian hair be colored?
Raw Natural Wavy hair can be professionally colored, including dimensional and lighter results. Because lightening chemically changes human hair, the outcome and long-term condition depend on the hair, formula, developer and processing. Substantial color changes are best handled by a licensed colorist.
How many Natural Wavy bundles do I need?
Quantity depends on both your natural density and the extension length. Shorter installations may use fewer bundles, while lengths 24 inches and longer generally need additional hair to maintain fullness through the ends. Use the quantity chart in this guide as a starting point.
How much does one Natural Wavy bundle weigh?
Each Natural Wavy weft is approximately 100 grams, or about 3.5 ounces.
Should I wash the bundles before installation?
I recommend cleansing and conditioning the hair before installation, then allowing it to air-dry. This also gives you an opportunity to see how the natural wave settles after the hair has been removed from its packaging.
How long can raw Natural Wavy hair last?
With proper care, SL Raw Natural Wavy Hair can be maintained and reused for years. Actual lifespan depends on frequency of wear, installation, coloring, heat styling, product use and home maintenance.
Is Natural Wavy the same as curly hair?
No. Natural Wavy is intended to give soft waves and body rather than a defined curly or coily pattern. If your priority is stronger curl definition, compare our other extension textures before ordering.
