How to Use Hot Rollers on Hair Extensions: My 24-Inch Hair Tutorial
Share
I’ll admit it: hot rollers were never the first styling tool I thought about reaching for when I wanted body and curls in my hair extensions.
Then I tried them on my long SL Raw Natural Wavy Hair—and understood why people still keep a roller set around.
Instead of curling every section with a wand or flat iron, I could roll the hair, let the rollers do their work while I finished getting ready, and then take them down for soft body, movement and volume.
If you have been wondering whether hot rollers can actually work on human hair extensions, they can. But the result depends on starting with dry, detangled hair, protecting it from heat and choosing your sections and roller sizes according to the finish you want.
Can You Use Hot Rollers on Human Hair Extensions?
Yes. Hot rollers can be used on human hair extensions that are safe for heat styling. Start with completely dry hair, use an appropriate heat protectant, detangle before rolling and avoid unnecessarily high heat or repeated heat exposure.
Hot rollers are especially useful when you want soft curls, body or a polished set without manually holding a curling iron on every section.
My First Hot-Roller Set on Long Hair Extensions
A friend encouraged me to try hot rollers, and initially I wasn’t convinced they were something I needed. I already knew how to create curls with flat irons and curling irons, so adding another tool to the routine did not seem necessary.
What changed my mind was how hands-off the setting portion could be. Once I rolled the sections, I could leave the hair alone while the rollers cooled rather than continuing to work through the entire head with a hot tool.
I was wearing 24-inch SL Raw Natural Wavy Hair wefts, so there was plenty of length to work with. The finished result gave the Natural Wavy texture a smoother, fuller set while still keeping movement through the ends.
And yes—if you bought the hair, it’s your hair. Style it and enjoy it.

After putting hot rollers into my own styling rotation, I also had the opportunity to share my professional hot-roller techniques with Martha Stewart. Their guide includes my recommendations for creating blowout volume, big ringlets, beach waves and tighter curls by changing roller size, section size and placement.

You do not need a long list of products. Get everything together before the rollers are hot so you are not searching for clips or a brush halfway through the set.
Hot Roller Set
Choose a set with enough rollers for your hair length, density and desired curl size. Larger rollers generally create softer body, while smaller rollers can create a tighter result.
Heat Protectant
Use an appropriate heat-protection product before applying heated rollers to human hair extensions.

Before You Roll: Start With Dry, Detangled Hair
This is where I would slow down instead of rushing straight into the rollers.
The extension hair should be completely dry before you begin. Heated styling tools should not be used as a shortcut for drying wet human hair extensions.
Next, gently detangle the lengths. For long hair, work from the ends upward and support the section as you brush rather than repeatedly pulling from the top through tangles.
Then apply your heat protectant according to the product directions and allow the hair to remain manageable rather than saturating it with styling products.
Protect the Hair Before Styling
The original routine used a heat-protection serum. If you would like to view the product referenced in the original tutorial, you can see the RUSK thermal serum on Amazon .
Heat the Rollers According to the Set Instructions
Plug in the roller set and let it reach the temperature recommended by the manufacturer.
There is no benefit to rushing this part. A roller that has not reached its intended temperature may not set the hair as effectively, while overheating or improvising beyond the manufacturer's directions is unnecessary.
While the set warms, finish detangling and sectioning your hair.
Choose Your Sections Based on the Curl You Want
The size of your section should work with the width of your roller rather than forcing a large amount of hair onto one roller.
For softer body and movement, use larger rollers and sections that sit neatly around them. For more curl, smaller sections can give the hair a more defined set.
If you are working with 24-inch or longer extensions, keep the ends smooth as you wrap. Do not allow the last few inches to crumple or fold unevenly around the roller.
Wrap the Hair Smoothly Around Each Roller
Take one section at a time and smooth it before rolling.
Keep the ends controlled, then wrap the hair around the roller toward the scalp. Secure the roller with the clip or fastener designed for your set.
The goal is secure—not painfully tight. If the roller is pulling excessively at your scalp or extension installation, reposition it.
Continue section by section until the areas you want curled are set.
Let the Rollers Cool Before Taking Them Down
This is the part that makes hot rollers different from quickly running a curling iron through the hair.
Once the rollers are in place, leave them alone and allow them to cool. Follow the timing guidance for the roller set you are using rather than removing them while they are still very warm.
For my routine, this gave me enough time to step away from my hair and do something else while the set developed.
Do not keep reheating the same section because you are impatient with the result. Give the set time to cool and see what the hair actually does before deciding it needs more styling.
Unroll—Don't Pull—the Hair Out
Once the rollers have cooled, remove the clips and unwind each section in the direction it was wrapped.
Do not drag the roller through the curl or pull it straight out through the ends.
Let each curl fall first. After all of the rollers are out, use your fingers to separate, loosen or arrange the curls according to the amount of volume you want.
If you want a softer finish, separate more. If you want to preserve stronger curl definition, handle the set less.
Why Natural Wavy Hair Worked Well for This Style
SL Raw Natural Wavy Hair already has movement when worn in its natural state. The hot rollers are not needed to make the hair wearable—they simply give you another styling option when you want a smoother, more deliberate curl set.
That is one of the things I like about human hair extensions: you are not locked into only one finish.
Natural Wavy can be worn in its natural pattern, straightened, curled or reshaped depending on the look you want, as long as you continue to care for the hair appropriately when using heat.

The tutorial above was performed on 24-inch SL Raw Natural Wavy wefts. The natural wave gives you movement on its own while still allowing the hair to be restyled when you want a different finish.
Can You Use Hot Rollers on I-Tips or Other Installed Extensions?
The human hair lengths may be heat styled when the specific extension hair is designed to handle heat, but your attachment method changes how carefully you need to work near the roots.
With I-Tips, Microlinks or other installed extensions, avoid placing unnecessary heat, pressure or tension directly against attachment points.
Support the section while styling, keep the roller placement comfortable and focus the heat styling on the extension hair rather than trying to roll tightly against beads or bonds.
If you are unsure where heated tools can safely be positioned with your installation, ask the professional who installed your extensions before experimenting near the attachment areas.
What If Your Hot-Roller Set Does Not Turn Out the Way You Expected?
Before assuming hot rollers do not work for your extensions, look at the set itself.
Common Reasons the Result May Be Different
- The hair was not completely dry: start with dry extension hair before using heated rollers.
- The sections were too large: too much hair on one roller can make the result less defined.
- The ends were not wrapped smoothly: folded or crumpled ends can affect the finished curl.
- The rollers were removed too soon: allow the set to cool before taking it down.
- The roller size did not match the desired result: larger rollers generally create softer movement; smaller rollers create more curl.
- The curl was immediately brushed apart: let the hair settle before deciding how much you want to separate it.
- Too much product was applied: heavy product buildup can change how the hair moves and holds a style.
Hot Rollers vs. a Curling Iron or Flat Iron
I would not say one is universally better. They simply create the style differently.
Useful for Setting While You Do Something Else
Once the rollers are installed, the hair can cool in place while you move on to another part of your routine. They are especially useful for body, volume and a soft set.
More Direct Control Over Each Section
A flat iron or curling iron can give you more immediate control over the shape and direction of each curl, but you work through the hair section by section with the heated tool.

How to Make the Finished Curls Last Overnight
Once you have taken the time to set your extensions, do not undo all of that work by leaving long hair loose and tangled while you sleep.
Make sure the hair is completely cool and dry before bed. Depending on the finished curl you want to preserve, loosely organize the lengths and protect them with satin or silk to reduce friction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use hot rollers on human hair extensions?
Yes, if the human hair extensions are designed to be heat styled. Start with dry, detangled hair, apply an appropriate heat protectant and avoid excessive heat or unnecessary tension around extension attachment points.
Do hot rollers work on long hair extensions?
Yes. The tutorial in this article uses hot rollers on 24-inch SL Raw Natural Wavy wefts. With longer hair, pay extra attention to section size and keeping the ends smooth as you wrap them around the roller.
Should hair be wet or dry before using hot rollers?
Use hot rollers on completely dry hair unless the manufacturer of your specific roller system explicitly instructs otherwise. Do not rely on heated rollers to dry wet human hair extensions.
Do I need heat protectant with hot rollers?
Heat protection is a sensible part of styling human hair extensions with heated tools. Choose a product appropriate for your hair and use it according to the manufacturer's directions without oversaturating the extensions.
How long should I leave hot rollers in?
Follow the instructions for the hot roller set you are using. In general, the rollers need enough time for the hair to set and the rollers to cool before removal rather than being taken out immediately while still hot.
Do bigger hot rollers make looser curls?
Larger rollers generally create softer body, bend and larger curls, while smaller rollers can create a more defined curl. Your hair length, section size and starting texture also influence the result.
Can I use hot rollers on Natural Wavy hair extensions?
Yes. SL Raw Natural Wavy human hair can be restyled. In the tutorial above, 24-inch Natural Wavy wefts are set with Conair hot rollers to create a smoother, more defined curl and additional body.
Will hot rollers damage my hair extensions?
Any repeated heat styling can affect human hair over time. Use appropriate heat protection, follow your tool's temperature and usage instructions, avoid unnecessary repeated heat passes and continue conditioning the extensions as part of their normal care routine.
