5 Signs It May Be Time to Refresh or Replace Your Hair Extensions
Share
Good hair extensions are an investment, and quality human hair can often be worn more than once when it is properly installed, removed and cared for. But even great hair changes with wear.
Brushing, combing, washing, heat styling, coloring, installation and removal can gradually affect the density and condition of your extensions. Sometimes the solution is a completely new set. Other times, most of your hair is still in beautiful condition and you simply need to replace one worn bundle or add a fresh bundle to bring some of the fullness back.
The key is knowing the difference.
Below, we're sharing five signs we look for when deciding whether hair extensions should be refreshed, partially replaced or fully replaced — including real examples of SL Raw Virgin Hair extensions after years of use.
1. Your Hair Extensions Stay Dry or No Longer Respond to Conditioning
Dryness by itself doesn't automatically mean your extensions need to be replaced. Product buildup, lack of moisture, hard water and improper care can all change how human hair feels.
Start with a proper wash and conditioning routine. If the hair softens, detangles and regains movement, you may simply have needed a reset.
Replacement becomes more worth considering when the hair continues to feel rough, brittle or difficult to manage even after you've properly cleansed and conditioned it.
Look for:
- Hair that continues to feel stiff or unusually rough after conditioning.
- Ends that remain brittle or severely frayed after trimming and conditioning.
- Hair that tangles excessively during normal wear.
- Loss of movement that doesn't improve after washing and moisturizing.
Before You Replace It
If the hair is still full and structurally sound, don't assume dryness means the end of its life. Cleanse it properly, condition it and reassess the hair once it is completely dry.
2. Shedding or Tangling Has Increased
Some gradual shedding is normal with reusable hair extensions. Every time hair is brushed, combed, washed, styled, installed or removed, individual strands may eventually release from the weft or attachment.
What matters is how much density has been lost and why.
There is a difference between normal long-term wear and damage caused by improper handling.
When Installation or Removal Causes Damage
Improper installation and removal can shorten the usable life of extensions that otherwise may have lasted much longer. Cutting through a weft repeatedly, failing to properly secure a cut weft, aggressive detangling or removing an attachment incorrectly can contribute to premature shedding and matting.
This is also why professional installation and removal matter. The quality of the hair is only one part of longevity — how the extensions are handled throughout their life matters too.

One of the biggest misconceptions about reusable human hair extensions is that reaching a certain age automatically means the hair needs to be thrown away.
There isn't one expiration date that applies to every bundle or every extension method. How often you wear the hair, how it was installed and removed, how much heat or chemical processing it received, your grooming habits and how the hair was maintained all affect longevity.
That's why we prefer to look at the condition of the hair rather than age alone.
What Five-Year-Old Raw Hair Can Actually Look Like
The images below are real SL Raw Virgin Hair wefts after approximately five years of use. We wanted to show them because this is what long-term wear can actually look like — not a perfect new bundle photographed for a product page.
This doesn't necessarily mean every bundle in the set needs to go.
If you have several bundles and two still look beautiful while one has become significantly thinner or more worn, you can replace that bundle and continue using the others.
And if all of your existing bundles are still in fairly good condition but the overall install isn't as full as it once was, adding one fresh bundle may be enough to restore the density you've been missing.
I-Tips Should Be Evaluated Individually Too
The same principle applies to individual extensions such as I-Tips. Not every strand necessarily reaches replacement condition at exactly the same time.
Our Rule: Look at Condition, Not Just the Calendar
Quality extensions are designed to be enjoyed, but longevity depends on how the hair is worn and cared for. If the hair still looks good, feels good and performs well, age alone isn't a reason to discard it.
4. Your Extensions Have Lost Fullness or No Longer Blend Naturally
This is one of the easiest signs to notice. Your extensions may still feel soft and look healthy, but your finished hairstyle doesn't have the density it once did.
That can happen gradually. Repeated brushing, combing, washing, styling, installation and removal can cause some strands to release over time. Eventually, a bundle that started full may simply have less hair than it once did.
Signs you may be losing density include:
- The ends look noticeably thinner than they once did.
- Your hairstyle looks less full even after styling.
- Your natural hair becomes more difficult to blend with the extensions.
- One bundle or section looks noticeably thinner than the rest.
You May Only Need One Fresh Bundle
Refreshing your extensions doesn't always mean starting over.
If you've been wearing several bundles and most of the hair is still in good condition, you may simply notice that your install doesn't feel quite as full as it once did. Some gradual density loss can happen with repeated washing, brushing, combing, styling, installation and removal.
In that situation, adding one fresh bundle alongside your existing hair can restore some of the fullness you've been missing without replacing hair that still looks and performs beautifully.
The same applies when one bundle has experienced more wear than the others. Keep what's still working for you and replace what isn't.
And sometimes? A fresh bundle simply feels good.

One of the advantages of quality human hair extensions is styling versatility. Depending on the hair, you may be able to curl, straighten or professionally color it.
But human hair extensions can still be damaged.
Repeated high heat, excessive bleaching, overlapping chemical processes or styling without adequate protection can eventually affect the integrity of the hair.
Look for:
- Persistent frizz or roughness that no longer improves with conditioning.
- Severe split or broken ends.
- Sections that feel significantly weaker than the rest of the hair.
- A curl or wave pattern that has been permanently altered by damage.
- Breakage that has noticeably reduced the density or length.
If the damage is concentrated in one bundle or several individual extensions, you may not need to replace everything. Evaluate the healthy hair separately and replace only what is no longer performing the way it should.
Refresh, Replace or Keep It? A Simple Way to Decide
Before purchasing a completely new set, take a good look at what you already have.
Keep it if the hair still feels healthy, has good density, detangles normally and continues to style well.
Refresh it if the hair is still usable but your overall style has lost some fullness. One fresh bundle may be all you need.
Partially replace it if one bundle, weft or group of individual extensions is noticeably more worn than the rest.
Replace the set when the majority of the hair has significant density loss, permanent damage, persistent tangling or no longer performs well after proper care.
Don't Throw Away Good Hair Just Because You Bought Something New
Purchasing a new bundle doesn't mean your existing hair automatically belongs in the trash. If your older extensions are still in good condition, clean and store them properly. Depending on the method and condition, they may still be useful for another install, additional fullness or a future style.

Knowing when hair extensions need replacing isn't about following an arbitrary expiration date. It's about paying attention to how the hair looks, feels and performs.
We've seen quality hair continue to serve our customers beautifully through multiple installs when it is properly maintained. We've also seen individual wefts and extension pieces wear faster because of how they were installed, removed, colored or styled.
That's why our advice is simple: keep what's still good, refresh what needs a little help and replace what has truly reached the end of its usable condition.
Whether that means one new bundle or an entirely fresh set, you'll make a better decision when you understand what your current hair is telling you.
