Making your own clip-in hair extensions gives you the flexibility and freedom to choose what type of hair you use, the quality, length, and the styles.

So, it’s good to know how to make clip-in hair extensions at home. And the beauty of this process is how simple and quick it is to do.

Here’s our step-by-step process on how make your own clip-in hair extensions at home.

What you’ll need:

Natural hair wefts
Wig clips
Hair scissors
Needle (curved sewing needle) and thread
Measuring tape (optional)

Why we don’t recommend buying loose bulk ‘ponytail hair’ for DIY clip-in extensions

It will be cheaper, yes. But it will also be extremely time-consuming (and difficult for some) to work with loose hair to try and create a weft on their own. We’re talking DIY, not torturing yourself.

So, we recommend natural hair on a weft.

We also prefer to use human hair extensions because of the versatility in care and styling without damaging the extensions. You’ll be able to color, curl, flat iron, wash and cut natural hair wefts without worrying about damaging the hair. And they’ll look much closer to your real hair.

Step-by-step process to making clip-in hair extensions

Step 1. Prep the weft

Thread your needle, double the thread, and tie off the ends.

Get your bundles, unwrap, and double the wefts. Then sew them together. Doubling the wefts ensures you get a fuller look with your clip-ins.

Make sure you sew the ends well with the thread penetrating the weft to keep the ends flat. Then you can sew together the wefted area going over the top for the sections in the middle from one end to the next.

Step 2. Measure and cut the hair

Measure the nape of your neck starting and stopping just within the hairline. You don’t want the edges of the extensions to be peeking out.

You can use a measuring tape to do this. Or you can measure the tracks by placing the hair where it would be clipped in on your head and then cutting the hair.

Measure from ear to ear once you’ve completed the nape area.

Now that you have measurements, cut the weft (cutting from above down) to the size you measured.

Step 4. Sew on the clips

Sew on the wig clips with the comb on the outside.

Thread the needle through the weft and the clip. You want to use as many wig clips as necessary to secure the clip-in to your hair. This means anywhere from 2-5 clips depending on the width of the extension.

Go through the hole on the clip at least twice to make sure it’s secure.

Be careful that you don’t sew the wig clip on backward as you’ll end up with the combs opening in the wrong direction. A hack to get around this problem is to open the clips before you start sewing.

Now that you’re clip-ins are ready, you can trim them up to blend in with your hair.
